About Hélène

Hélène Pilorgé is a research associate at the University of Pennsylvania. She was previously a postdoctoral fellow at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and holds a PhD in geology from the University of Lyon (France).

Hélène studies carbon management strategies for mitigating climate change. She focuses mainly on carbon accounting of various carbon management solutions and on mapping and spatial analyses for responsible deployment of carbon management, with minimal social and environmental impacts. Her work outlines best opportunities for carbon capture (from industrial point sources or from the air), CO2 storage (underground and ex-situ using waste sources of alkalinity), and low-carbon energy sources (geothermal, solar, wind, biomass) to power climate infrastructures. She optimizes systems by looking into the co-location of the steps of carbon management systems. When co-location is not possible, she is developing a multimodal transport model. More recently, Hélène is including environmental justice and social justice components in her studies, to aim towards an equitable transition towards a decarbonized economy.
