About Katherine
Katherine Vaz Gomes is a PhD Candidate in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a graduate research assistant in the Clean Energy Conversions Lab. Katherine holds undergraduate degrees in chemical engineering and professional writing from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Katherine researches the carbon mineralization of mine wastes. She conducts experiments in the extraction of elements from mineral structures to produce carbonates for carbon storage. Katherine is interested in the application of carbonates in low carbon building materials for carbon utilization and storage.
Katherine earned a certificate in Science Communication from the Penn Science Policy and Diplomacy Group. She is currently pursuing a certificate in Energy Management from the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. For the 2021-22 academic year, she is a Graduate Associate at the Perry World House. Outside of Penn, she is a science advisor for Carbon Direct, providing expertise in carbon removal services and investments.
